Tacos, Tacos, Tacos – The Capitol Riverfront Ranking

We dare you to try and come up with a better food/drink combo than tacos & tequila. The mix of flavors, the accompanying guacamole, the fact you can eat them with your hands – everything leads to a euphoric dining moment. If you want to see someone’s true colors come out, ask them their favorite place to grab tacos. They’ll get defensive, protective, and potentially a tear in their eye as they describe the spot where they spend every Taco Tuesday. Lucky for us, Capitol Riverfront is booming with plenty of dining options featuring tasty tacos so you can try all of them and defend your pick. Until then, here’s our ranking of the best tacos in town.

#4 Taco City DC

This place is perfect for when you have an intense taco craving, it isn’t yet Tuesday, and you need tacos de pescado in your vicinity ASAP. The homemade corn tortillas are delightful and the options are seemingly endless. If you’re feeling adventurous, dabble with the Lengua taco. It’s an intriguing mix of radish, cilantro, onion, salsa roja, and beef tongue. Don’t knock it til’ ya try it.

#3 Agua 301

If you’re the type of person who sits at their desk day dreaming of being in Mexico, sipping on margaritas while looking out at the ocean, we hear you. While we can’t give you a vacay to Tulum, we do know a place where you can get served tacos and tequila while looking out to the water. And when we say water we mean the Anacostia river. Agua 301 is gorgeously designed and has incredibly tasty food. This place is great for a date night or when you want to order 3-7 decadent tacos to go and eat them all on your couch while binge watching Blue Planet, thinking about how you’re going to get to a Tulum beach.

#2 El Bebe

Honestly, you’ll probably want to go here just so you can say ‘El Bebe’ multiple times (** cue, “I studied abroad in Spain for a semester” comment**). This new Navy Yard restaurant is, dare we say, extremely cute and fun. The interior is stunning and features a cheeky neon sign with the words ‘Tequila, yes. You, maybe.’ El Bebe also has great vegetarian options like mushroom or cauliflower tacos.

# 1 Mission – Navy Yard

In terms of convenience, you really can’t beat walking downstairs to get to your tacos. Our ground floor neighborhood has an Instagram-worthy atmosphere, a house margarita (comes in pitchers for happy hours with friends) and has some darn good tacos. Our pick? The Buffalo Shrimp tacos – they’re subtly sweet and have a funky kick of blue cheese that pairs beautifully with a spicy margarita.

Our modern apartments in Capitol Riverfront are surrounded by some of DC’s best dining, bars, and entertainment options. It’s all up to you to explore. For more information on our Navy Yard apartments, contact us today!

The split-level layout of the penthouse allows for extra space and ultimate privacy. The bottom floor serves as an entertaining and dining hot spot while the top floor is arranged for perfectly tranquil relaxation.

Tackle Your 2019 Wellness Goals At The Capitol Riverfront

Finding the motivation to take a fitness class can be challenging at times — pair that with characteristically cold winter months in DC and it can feel like your own personal rendition of Mission: Impossible. That being said, we know that with 2019 taking off, finding new goals to go after can be an exciting part of the new year. While we can’t physically do the work for you (although that would be rad) we do happen to be in one of the best spots in the city to foster an environment of wellness so that your journey is a little bit easier.

Yoga with Realignment Studio

For the seasoned veteran or inspiring yogi — look no further than this grounding class every Tuesday and Thursday at the Rose Physical Therapy office. Realignment studio is a local, women-owned meditation and yoga studio where all levels of experience are welcome to explore the practice of presence.

This Pilates-based fitness class is one of the most challenging out there. You’ll spend the majority of the class on a machine that will use resistance and your own body weight to give you a workout like no other — seriously, you’ll be sore in places that you didn’t even know existed. Lights are dim, music is perfectly echoed throughout the room, and the comradery between your fellow fitness warriors will motivate you to complete the 50-minute class.

VIDA Fitness

Although we have a fully equipped fitness center at 1221 Van, we understand that some people like to go to a designated gym for their fitness “me time.” Vida Fitness is a great option for those who like the option between a variety of classes, personal training, nutritional classes, and swoon-worthy locker rooms. Not to mention, it’s within walking distance and right near the Navy Yard Metro so you can go straight to or from work.

Trapeze School

You know all the times you threatened to run away to the circus as an angsty child? No? Just us? Ok well anyways, here is your chance to try something completely different in the fitness realm. This fun Navy Yard establishment is ready for all levels of experience when it comes to flying upside down and trying to catch a small bar mid-air. You may hate it, you may love it, but we can guarantee you won’t forget it.

Meeting your fitness goals is always best accompanied by a holistic approach. If supporting yourself internally resonates with you, GNC is there for all your vitamin, mineral, supplement, and nutritional needs. You know you’re an adult when walking into a store filled with vitamins sounds like a fun weekend activity.

Whole Foods Market

Speaking of fun weekend activities…we all are guilty of getting a little too excited about roaming the aisles of Whole Foods and going for seconds on the free samples. Seriously though, having this magical grocery store come to Capitol Riverfront is a huge win. Although it can be pricey, if you’re strategic about which items you purchase there, your wellness goals can be exponentially supported though their fresh and organic choices.

No matter how you choose to accomplish your 2019 goals, 1221 Van and the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood have got your back. When it comes to resolutions in general, it’s all about consistency, not perfection. Experiment with some, or all, of the options above and see what makes most sense for you. And if none of these options suit your fancy, you can always head down to the K!CK Fitness Center #OnVan.

Roommates’ Best Friend

Who said roommates had to be human? Share space with your animal in our pet-friendly apartments.

Get tickets here for the December 1st and 2nd event, or take it all in from the 1221 Van rooftop.

Soy Wax Candle Pouring

Feeling crafty and need a way to combat the Sunday scaries after a night out on the town? Navigating D.C.’s Navy Yard

For the inexperienced D.C. residents, navigating the city can be quite overwhelming at first. You may find yourself asking which metro line you need to get on, where do you need to transfer, what neighborhood are you in, which way is north? The confusion can send anyone into a spiral, but luckily for our 1221 Van residents, they’re in the heart of it all and navigating the city has never been so easy. For those who are new to the area, we’ve broken down all the different ways to get from point A to point B and for those who are D.C. natives reading this, please bear with the newer folks as they learn to navigate the Navy Yard and the rest of D.C.

The Metro Train

Using the Washington, D.C., Metrorail system can be intimidating to the untrained eye but once you learn how to use it, navigating the District will be a breeze. While Ubers, Lyfts, taxis, the bus, and your friend’s car are definitely all options for getting around, there’s nothing quite as fast or direct as using the D.C. area Metro system. Luckily, 1221 Van is only a few blocks away from two Green Line Metro stops, making it easier than ever to stay connected to the rest of the city.

The Metro runs throughout the city and the neighboring suburbs of Virginia and Maryland. There are 6 ‘lines’ all with a coordinating color – Yellow, Green, Blue, Silver, Orange, and Red. The Waterfront and Navy Yard Ball Park Green Line stations are just blocks away from our doors, making for a no non-sense option for cruising on over to nearby U Street, the Shaw neighborhood, or transferring lines at Chinatown/Gallery Place and have access to all the Red Line stops such as Dupont Circle.

Having such close access to the public transport system will save you time, money, and headache when trying to figure out how to get to your next destination. It also makes exploring the city that much more fun when you know that the taking a cross town trip is just a quick metro ride away. If you’re still unsure about using the Metro system, have no fear. Just ask a friendly D.C. face but remember one important Metro etiquette lesson – NEVER stand on the left side of the escalator. DC locals use the right side for standing and let the escalator carry them to the top while the left side is meant for people who want to move a bit faster and walk (or run) to the top. Nothing says ‘tourist’ quite like someone standing on the left side of the escalator during rush hour.

Walking – A Pedestrian Friendly Navy Yard

Not a fan of the sometimes crowded Metro cars? Opt for the greener choice of transportation and take in the beautiful neighborhood scenery as you make your way by foot. Whether you’re planning to have a picnic with friends in Yards Park, or are taking a stroll along the Capital Riverfront, the Navy Yard is one of the most pedestrian friendly areas with plenty of sidewalks and bike paths. Enjoy the restaurants, retail and nightlife in and around the ballpark and Capitol Riverfront without having to spend a dime on getting there. Not sure where to go first? Check out our neighborhood page here for a full list of go to spots in the area that are just a quick stroll away from the front door.

Bike (or scooter if you’re into that)

Bikes and scooters offer the convenience of getting around the city quickly, are environmentally friendly, and are a fun alterative to a car or Metro. If you’re itching to take a bike ride around the city, the Navy Yard is home to plenty of bike trails and Capital Bikeshare spots (the closest being at the corner of N and First St. in Navy Yard) that allow you to explore the city at your own pace. For more information on the other bike share spots and trails through the area, click here.

Whether you’re walking around the neighborhood by foot, exploring the city from your bike or scooter, or taking a cross town trip to visit another D.C. neighborhood, there are transportation options for every destination when you live at 1221 Van. To learn more about our ideal location in the ideal city and ideal ways to get around to your favorite destinations, click here.

2:41pm: (For the book worm in us all) – After chowing down with your brunch buddies, it’s a good time to take a moment to breathe and let your body settle for a bit. You take that new book you can’t put down and bring it up to the rooftop to relax and finish that chapter (or three) on our luxurious lounge chairs overlooking our infinity pool. Taking in the surrounding views of D.C. (did we mention our rooftop deck is spacious, open, and covers 3 out of the 4 sides of our building?) and the cool breeze blowing on the high-rise building, you can’t help but doze off for a bit.

4:11pm: You’re suddenly awakened by a splash from one of your friends who just arrived at the pool deck and realize just how hot the summer sun is in that moment. You quickly hop in the crystal-clear, perfect temperature, infinity pool giving your skin the refreshing dip it needed. As you towel off, you you stand in awe of the gorgeous D.C. views seen from every angle. To your right, the Anacostia River is glistening and directly due south, the Nat’s Stadium is the perfect summer backdrop.

6:20pm: (For the hostess with the mostest) – Those margaritas from brunch earlier are starting to call your name again. You decide to take full advantage of the rooftop’s lounge and the fully equipped wet bar and mix up a few cocktails for your friends who are joining you in the weekend’s festivities. Outside, the grill station is just starting to heat up, which happens to be the perfect meeting spot for an evening BBQ. With our large stainless-steel grills built into outdoor counter space, and oversized lounge chairs, you’ll have plenty of space to food prep and relax comfortably. As you lounge on the couches and enjoy your freshly grilled meal, you watch from above as the National’s stadium begins to fill up.

7:05pm: (For the Baseball fanatic)-  It’s game time. Everyone gathers by the rooftop stadium seats that are perfectly positioned to look right down home plate so that you’ll never miss a pitch. Crowd cheers are heard, laughs are had, and memories are made. It’s the perfect summer night.

9:32pm: As the air starts to cool down, our gas fire pits start to call your name and invite you to get cozy with your friends. Our rooftop has a resort-style lounge with couches spread out throughout the deck with personal fire pits, making any evening special, and tonight is no different.

10:24pm: (For the competitive friend) – The bets are on. You and your friends get into a competitive game of pool while taking advantage of the beautiful billiard table in the lounge and end up playing a few games while enjoying the nighttime city lights coming in through the windows. You hit the last shot to win the game and victory is yours. Summer in Navy Yard: 5 Spots to Check Out Now!

We may be biased but our Navy Yard neighborhood is one of the most vibrant and exciting places to be in D.C., partly because there’s always something going on and partly because we can get in on all the action first hand. Seriously, this neighborhood is constantly opening the next popular bar or restaurant and hosting some of the most anticipated events in the area – not to mention they’re always in walking distance of 1221 Van. Make this summer one to remember by taking advantage of everything that is happening in this growing area. We’ve outlined a few spots we’re most excited about below, so make sure to check them out!

1. Mission
The long awaited and highly anticipated opening of Mission happened on Saturday, July 14th right below 1221 Van. This bar features a two-story atrium and has all the tacos and margs you could ever need for Taco Tuesdays. Also, we should probably mention that they do an unreal brunch deal involving bottomless margaritas and guacamole. Is it the weekend yet?

2. Outdoor Movie Series
Although we didn’t have a Gal Gadot or Kristen Wiig sighting this summer when they were filming the newest Wonder Woman movie in D.C. (*sigh*) we can look forward to seeing one of our favorite superheroes on the big screen soon. The Outdoor Movie Series will be showing Wonder Woman at Canal Park on Thursday, August 9th at sundown. Gather a few friends and pack some snacks for a perfect early start to the weekend.

3. Kayak Tour on the Anocostia River
Living at 1221 Van means water-side living right by the Anacostia River. Celebrate the summer with an evening kayak adventure with Anacostia Riverkeeper. The tour group will meet up at The Yards Marina at 5:30pm and enjoy an hour and a half coast down the river. The first 10 people who show up will receive a free experience while anyone after that will pay $20. This unique and Instagram-worthy adventure (if you’re brave enough to take your phone on the kayak) will occur July 26th and August 2nd.

4. Truckeroo
The infamous pregame spot for Nat’s games, The Bullpen, will be hosting their monthly festival called Truckeroo on August 10th and September 14th. Truckeroo is an opportunity for you to try delicious food from some of D.C.’s best food trucks! Steps away from 1221 Van’s front door, there will also be live music, cold beer and drinks, and an array of fun games to add to the entertainment. Check out this iconic D.C. spot when you get the chance!

5. Chloe
If you haven’t tried out Chloe, one of the hottest new restaurants in Navy Yard from chef Haidar Karoum, you need to put it on your summer bucket list. This eclectic and travel-inspired restaurant has been getting praise since its opening. The décor and aesthetic are beautiful and the food is perfectly satisfying. Order a crisp white wine and enjoy a summer evening dining at one of the best spots in town.

Take a Closer Look at Our Dog-Friendly Neighborhood

We know how much you love your pets. So do we. 1221 Van is completely pet-friendly and we always look forward to meeting your 4-legged roommates. For those moving in with dogs, it’s useful to get to know the neighborhood from a dog-owner’s perspective. Luckily for our residents, we’re always on the look-out for places around the Capitol Riverfront and Navy Yard to visit with your dog.

Pet-Friendly Green Spaces

Our neighborhood is designed to be dog-friendly, with plenty of green spaces to explore with you and your pup just right around the corner. Now that it’s warmer out, exploring and meeting other neighborhood pets is one of the joys of living at 1221 Van. There’s nothing quite like the shared joy of owning a dog that gets people talking. To make sure your pup has all the right gear to explore, we recommend making a pit-stop at Unleashed by Petco. They’re stocked with all the right things to make for a happy dog, including free treats to take on your way out. Pick up a few toys or a new leash, then head over to Canal Park for an interactive play-space where your dog can roam amongst the dancing fountains. If you’re looking for something even more scenic, we suggest The Yards Park for a city escape with a view of the water. Sometimes all you need is open air and grass underfoot to get you and your dog feeling refreshed.

Dog-Friendly Dining

After a couple hours of play, a snack and a drink are a much needed treat for you and your pooch. Bring them along with you to one of the Navy Yard’s dog-friendly bars and restaurants. For a casual, cool atmosphere we love The Brig – it offers classic bar food and drinks all while being totally cool with your 4-legged guest in their outdoor seating area – we recommend stopping by for their “Yappy Hour.” When the weather is just right, nothing can beat Bardo Brewing. The hip and trendy riverfront brewery lets you sip on local brews al-fresco with ample grass for your pup to graze while you play a game of corn hole. Who knows, your dog might want to get in on a game as well. It doesn’t get much better than that.

We know how important your pets are and we’re happy our pet-friendly neighborhood has places where you can both explore and enjoy spring weather. Learn more about all that the area around 1221 Van has to offer here and contact us to book your tour #OnVan.
